Albert Ahearn - 911

Albert Ahearn - 911

Our hearts cleaved that horrific day. br The early morning sun shined bright. br No clues were noticed-giveaways br that could forewarn the urbanites. br br It began like any Tuesday. br A workday for most New Yorkers. br People bustling to the subways br on their way to their employers. br br Still early, not all arrived where br their designated work stations br are situated. Poor souls! unaware br of their imminent destruction. br br Suddenly, at eight forty two br A living bomb with mal-vigor br Intentionally, in plain view br Crashed through the north twin tower. br br All screaming, jumping casualties, br Burning, smoking, funeral pyre. br When suddenly at nine O three br a second struck the south tower. br br Both monoliths are now aflame. br Confusion reined both high and low. br Towering infernos became br A cataclysmic horrid show. br br Meanwhile, firemen tried in vain br To rescue those inside the traps, br Doomed victims of the deadly planes. br My God! The south tower collapsed! br br All the humanity within br The conflagration expired br In an instant: Men and women br Buried under concrete and fire. br br Standing alone and mortally br Wounded, amidst ash and rubble br Like a saint at the stake, bravely br Awaits the inescapable. br br “Commit their bodies to the ground; br Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, br Dust to dust.” An instant grave mound: br The north tower collapses. br br Never! Will our lives be the same. br Witnessing the loss of our brethren: br Over twenty nine hundred claimed br That day: September eleven.
