Once Prince Ajatashatru sent br Oil drums for lamps at night. br An old woman, who saw this br Wished to give oil for lamps. br br But she was too poor to buy br Still she didn’t give up her try. br She cut off her long hair, br And for oil, she sold her hair.” br br She gave that oil, with a lamp, br To Buddha for lighting up, br He received the oil cup br And used it for her lamp. br br Her lamp lasted thro’ the night br And was spreading steady light. br The lamps, with the oil sent br By the prince, blew off by midnight. br br Buddha said, “The woman br Was sincere in her intention. br While the royal prince br Exhibited his arrogance.” br br “This is the difference br Found in their performance. br One who’s always humble br Shines in their life well.” br br “In no way her small offer br Can be taken as inferior, br While the prince’s bulk offer br Cannot be taken as superior.” br br “The sincerity, not the size, br The humility, not the price, br These values only count br To accept any asset.” br br Buddha was a conqueror br Of the spiritual world, br And was a reformer br Of the material world.
