Mark R Slaughter - I Think I Need A God

I think I need a god – but whom to choose? br A raft of deities; I'm sure to lose br My sense in search. And what about a church? br br And of their role – direct communication–? br Mediation–? that imbroglio; the br Rigmarole of what they call religion. br br Will they tell me what I have to do–? br How to pray, obey the laws: construe br The mandate; follow fast in their tradition – br All the fundamentals? Much ambition br Is required, I think! Where's the drink? br A brandy please, for disconcerted minds. br br Ah…warming…and indeed revealing… br Yes, I see – the reason for the many gods: br An anachronism; rationale from br Our primeval brains: When early Man br Evolved along the tree, a new survival br Tool emerged. We call it cogitation – br Cerebral aptitude for modelling all br We see in our environment – but then we br Started thinking of our mighty world, br How it all began, unfurled, and why? br It had to be the sun – no, the stars, no, br A special kind of entity: br Invisible, omnipotent, and, er…shy: br A god! br br Dear, oh dear; so do I need a god –? br A legacy of early exposition; br Revelationary evolution: br Memes, enforced upon impressionable youth, br Variegating into multitudinous br Delusions, packaged into institutions; br br Just an overwhelming whim from our br Imagination, all in effort for br An explanation – but all too much for me to br Understand. I think I need a god.
