Rajaram Ramachandran - ##32 (Vivekananda) Sympathy for Untouchables

At Rajputana, in a religious meet br Swamiji came to participate, br But none cared for his rest, br Or for his food at least. br br A poor low caste man br Gave him with hesitation br Some uncooked food br As cooked one was prohibited. br br As he was an untouchable, br The high class people, br Kept him at a distance br In all the functions. br br Taking pity on him, br Swamiji then told him br “Bring your cooked food, br For me, it’s good.” br br On seeing his kindness, br The poor man shed tears, br And gave him cooked meal, br That, in fact, tasted well br br Swamiji felt, “The poor people br Who’re so good and simple, br Live in huts as untouchables. br And such people, we despise.” br br For many days, with no food, br At some places, he remained. br He stayed then with sweepers br Who were treated as outcastes. br br They were very simple, br As well as more humble, br And possessed many virtues br Of true spiritual values. br br Many times, Swamiji wept. br “Why such men are kept br At the feet of our society br Without any kind of mercy? ” br br For them, Swamiji prayed, br Wherever he had stayed, br For their speedy deliverance br From this unpardonable injustice.
