He said, that Allah had cursed thrice Afghanistan; br cursed it with those curses, which all evil men br see as their life’s blessings: br br first, He gave them the opium poppy: br so that if they chose, an easy wealth br would kill their fellow men all round the world br with its addiction; which they themselves could claim br was not at all their fault.. br br and easy wealth would give them time br for Allah’s second curse: the manly thrill br of fighting and of killing; to pursue which, br one must invent an enemy; then, br an enemy invented, enemy he must become; br and so, the whole world now an enemy.. br br the third and the most dreadful curse br cannot be named or be described.. br secret; awful; deadly; all-consuming: br hidden in the hearts of holy hypocrites.
