John Knight - *813 TREES IN WINTER

John Knight - *813 TREES IN WINTER

Trees in the Winter lose their leaves br Their Autumn glory blows away, br The ground their mulch and mor receives br As in the wind bare branches sway. br br The stately poplars show their shape br Oval like gherkins on a pole, br The chestnut - rounded like a cape br The weeping willow loooks quite droll. br br The Winter makes us value Spring br The trees are bleak and blown and bare, br The woods are quiet - no birds sing br Except a lone owl hooting there. br br The Winter winds are piercing chill br And through the hedgerow blows a gale, br White driven snow the valleys fill br Skeletal Oaks stand in the vale. br br Devoid of leaves each tree reveals br Its structure - branches - twigs and trunk, br One wonders just how cold it feels br To have ones roots beneath snow sunk. br br The holly makes a welcome sight br Its deep green leaves poke through the snow, br Together with red berries bright br It gives a pleasant Christmas glow. br br Their cloaks of yellow, red and gold br Have leaf by leaf been blown away, br Just as a 'pop star' growing old br Loses his aura day by day. br br But unlike humans trees are blest br When Winter's snows have passed away, br Each branch with bright Spring green is dressed br Each tree grows younger day by day.
