John Le Gay Brereton - Anzac

John Le Gay Brereton - Anzac

Within my heart I hear the cry br Of loves that suffer, souls that die, br And you may have no praise from me br For warfare's vast vulgarity; br Only the flag of love, unfurled br For peace above a weeping world, br I follow, though the fiery breath br Of murder shrivel me in death. br Yet here I stand and bow my head br To those whom other banners led, br Because within their hearts the clang br Of Freedom's summoning trumpets rang, br Because they welcomed grisly pain br And laughed at prudence, mocked at gain, br With noble hope and courage high, br And taught our manhood how to die. br Praise, praise and love be theirs who came br From that red hell of stench and flame, br Staggering, bloody, sick, but still br Strong with indomitable will, br Happy because, in gloomiest night, br Their own hearts drummed them to the fight.
