John Le Gay Brereton - Lali

John Le Gay Brereton - Lali

While the summer day is hot br You and I will loaf awhile, br Lolling in a leafy spot, br Lali of the cunning smile. br br You and I have little care br How the “precious moments” pass br While we snuff the drowsy air br Rich in fragrance of the grass. br br Stupid people boom or squeal br Lessons drawn from daily strife; br “Time,” they cry, “is on the wheel; br Death puts out the gas of life. br br Imitate the prudent ant, br Labour like the busy bee.” br O the everlasting cant! br Loafing's good for you and me. br br Here we watch the ants that haul br Loads by weary jungle ways! br If they like it, let them crawl br Laden through the heavy blaze. br br We've no time for moral tags; br We can hear a sleepy sound br With his yellow tucker-bags br Brother Bee is bumming round. br br Little souls are vexed to see br How their hours of toil decrease: br Floating dreams for you and me, br Lazy joy in starry peace.
