John Keats - Fragment: Modern Love

John Keats - Fragment: Modern Love

And what is love? It is a doll dress'd up br For idleness to cosset, nurse, and dandle; br A thing of soft misnomers, so divine br That silly youth doth think to make itself br Divine by loving, nad so goes on br Yawning and doting a whole summer long, br Till Miss's comb is made a perfect tiara, br And common Wellingtons turn Romeo boots; br Then Cleopatra lives at number seven, br And Antony resides in Brunswick Square. br Fools! if some passions high have warm'd the world, br If Queens and Soldiers have play'd deep for hearts, br It is no reason why such agonies br Should be more common than the growth of weeds. br Fools! make me whole again that weighty pearl br The Queen of Egypt melted, and I'll say br That ye may love in spite of beaver hats.
