James Stephens - The Goat Paths

James Stephens - The Goat Paths

The crooked paths go every way br Upon the hill - they wind about br Through the heather in and out br Of the quiet sunniness. br And there the goats, day after day, br Stray in sunny quietness, br Cropping here and cropping there, br As they pause and turn and pass, br Now a bit of heather spray, br Now a mouthful of the grass. br br In the deeper sunniness, br In the place where nothing stirs, br Quietly in quietness, br In the quiet of the furze, br For a time they come and lie br Staring on the roving sky. br br If you approach they run away, br They leap and stare, away they bound, br With a sudden angry sound, br To the sunny quietude; br Crouching down where nothing stirs br In the silence of the furze, br Couching down again to brood br In the sunny solitude. br br If I were as wise as they br I would stray apart and brood, br I would beat a hidden way br Through he quiet heather spray br To a sunny solitude; br And should you come I'd run away, br I would make an angry sound, br I would stare and turn and bound br To the deeper quietude, br To the place where nothing stirs br In the silence of the furze. br br In that airy quietness br I would think as long as they; br Through the quiet sunniness br I would stray away to brood br By a hidden beaten way br In a sunny solitude. br br I would think until I found br Something I can never find, br Something lying on the ground, br In the bottom of my mind.
