James Stephens - Check

James Stephens - Check

The night was creeping on the ground; br She crept and did not make a sound br Until she reached the tree, and then br She covered it, and sole again br Along the grass beside the wall. br br I heard the rustle of her shawl br As she threw blackness everywhere br Upon the sky and ground and air, br And in the room where I was hid: br But no matter what she did br To everything that was without, br She could not put my candle out. br br So I stared at the night, and she br Stared back solemnly at me.
