Rudyard Kipling - Memories

Rudyard Kipling - Memories

'The eradication of memories of the Great War. -SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT ORGAN br br The Socialist Government speaks: br br THOUGH all the Dead were all forgot br And razed were every tomb, br The Worm-the Worm that dieth not br Compels Us to our doom. br Though all which once was England stands br Subservient to Our will, br The Dead of whom we washed Our hands, br They have observance still. br br We laid no finger to Their load. br We multiplied Their woes. br We used Their dearly-opened road br To traffic with Their foes: br And yet to Them men turn their eyes, br To Them are vows renewed br Of Faith, Obedience, Sacrifice, br Honour and Fortitude! br br Which things must perish. But Our hour br Comes not by staves or swords br So much as, subtly, through the power br Of small corroding words. br No need to make the plot more plain br By any open thrust; br But-see Their memory is slain br Long ere Their bones are dust! br br Wisely, but yearly, filch some wreath- br Lay some proud rite aside- br And daily tarnish with Our breath br The ends for which They died.
