Walter de la Mare - As I was walking

As I was walking, br Thyme sweet to my nose, br Green grasshoppers talking, br Rose rivalling rose: br And wing, like amber, br Dispread in light, br As from bush to bush br Linnet took flight: br Master Rabbit I saw br In the shadow-rimmed mouth br Of his sandy cavern, br Looking out to the South. br 'Twas dew-tide coming; br The turf was sweet br To nostril, curved tooth, br And wool-soft feet. br Sun was in West; br Crystal in beam br Of its golden shower br Did his round eye gleam. br Lank human was I, br And a foe, poor soul— br Snowy flit of a scut, br He was into his hole, br And—stamp, stamp, stamp! br Through dim labyrinths clear, br The whole world darkened, br A murderer near.
