Sappho - To A Rich Vulgarian

Sappho - To A Rich Vulgarian

Fragments 35, 67, 81, 72, 68 combined. br br Thou fool — that thou shouldst plume thyself br On rich attire, on jewel-hoard, br On dross of thine ill-gotten pelf, br On carcanet and flashing ring, br On meats and wines that load thy board! br Ay, cup on cup past numbering br Thou drainest with the drunken! Fool, br Who hast not learnt in wisdom's school br That wealth is an accursed thing br Dislinked from goodness! Only when br These twain are wedded, happiness br True and abiding comes to bless br The fleeting life of dying men. br Fool! — yet not as in wrath I speak: br Not I on thee would vengeance wreak. br A quiet spirit dwells in me br That scorns to bruise such worms as thee. br Nay, but the inevitable Fate br Even now decrees thine after-state: — br When thou art dead, so shalt thou lie br Ever: thy very name shall die. br Thy sordid story not outlast br Thy burial; for no part thou hast br In Song-land's roses, whose perfume br Breathes life immortal, o'er the tomb br Triumphant.
