Robert Graves - Thunder At Night

Robert Graves - Thunder At Night

Restless and hot two children lay br Plagued with uneasy dreams, br Each wandered lonely through false day br A twilight torn with screams. br br True to the bed-time story, Ben br Pursued his wounded bear, br Ann dreamed of chattering monkey men, br Of snakes twined in her hair... br br Now high aloft above the town br The thick clouds gather and break, br A flash, a roar, and rain drives down: br Aghast the young things wake. br br Trembling for what their terror was, br Surprised by instant doom, br With lightning in the looking glass, br Thunder that rocks the room. br br The monkeys' paws patter again, br Snakes hiss and flash their eyes: br The bear roars out in hideous pain: br Ann prays: her brother cries. br br They cannot guess, could not be told br How soon comes careless day, br With birds and dandelion gold, br Wet grass, cool scents of May.
