Paul Laurence Dunbar - Absence

Paul Laurence Dunbar - Absence

GOODNIGHT, my love, for I have dreamed of thee, br In walking dreams, until my soul is lost — br Is lost in passion's wide and shoreless sea, br Where, like a ship unruddered, it is tossed br Hither and thither at the wild waves will. br There is no potent Master's voice to still br This newer, more tempestuous Galilee! br br The stormy petrels of my fancy fly br In warning course across the darkening green, br And, like a frightened bird, my heart doth cry br And seek to find some rock of rest between br The threatening sky and the relentless wave. br It is not length of life that grief doth crave, br But only calm and peace in which to die. br br Here let me rest upon this single hope, br For oh, my wings are weary of the wind, br And with its stress no more may strive or cope. br One cry has dulled mine ears mine eyes are blind— br Would that o'er all the intervening space, br I might fly forth and see thee face to face. br I fly; I search, but, love, in gloom I grope. br br Fly home, far bird, unto thy waiting nest; br Spread they strong wings above the wind-swept sea. br Beat the grim breeze with thy ruffled breast br Until thou sittest wing to wing with me.
