Paul Laurence Dunbar - After Many Days

Paul Laurence Dunbar - After Many Days

I'VE always been a faithful man br An' tried to live for duty, br But the stringent mode of life br Has somewhat lost its beauty. br The story of the generous bread br He sent upon the waters, br Which after many days returns br To trusting sons and daughters, br Had oft impressed me, so I want br My soul influenced by it, br And bought a loaf of bread and sought br A stream where I could try it. br I cast my bread upon the waves br And fancied then to await it; br It had not floated far away br When a fish came up and ate it. br And if I want both fish and bread, br And surely both I'm wanting, br About the only way I see br Is for me to go fishing.
