Hilaire Belloc - Ballade Of Modest Confession

Hilaire Belloc - Ballade Of Modest Confession

My reading is extremely deep and wide; br And as our modern education goes— br Unique I think, and skilfully applied br To Art and Industry and Autres Choses br Through many years of scholarly repose. br But there is one thing where I disappoint br My numerous admirers (and my foes). br Painting on Vellum is my weakest point. br br I ride superbly. When I say I 'ride' br The word's too feeble. I am one of those br That dominate a horse. It is my pride br To tame the fiercest with tremendous blows br Of heel and knee. The while my handling shows br Such lightness as a lady's. But Aroint br Thee! Human frailty with thy secret woes! br Painting on Vellum is my weakest point. br br Painting on Vellum: not on silk or hide br Or ordinary Canvas: I suppose br No painter of the present day has tried br So many mediums with success, or knows br As well as I do how the subject grows br Beneath the hands of genius, that anoint br With balm. But I have something to disclose— br Painting on Vellum is my weakest point. br br br Envoi br Prince! do not let your Nose, your royal Nose, br Your large imperial Nose get out of Joint. br For though you cannot touch my golden Prose, br Painting on Vellum is my weakest point.
