Boris Pasternak - Autumn

Boris Pasternak - Autumn

I have allowed my family to scatter, br All those who were my dearest to depart, br And once again an age-long loneliness br Comes in to fill all nature and my heart. br br Alone this cottage shelters me and you: br The wood is an unpeopled wilderness br And ways and footpaths wear, as in the song. br Weeds almost overgrowing each recess; br br And where we sit together by ourselves br The log walls gaze upon us mournfully. br We gave no promise to leap obstacles, br We shall yet face our end with honesty. br br At one we'll sit, at three again we'll rise, br My book with me, your sewing in your hand, br Nor with the dawning shall we realize br When all our kissing shall have had an end. br br You leaves, more richly and more recklessly br Rustle your dresses, spill yourselves away, br And fill a past day's cup of bitterness br Still higher with the anguish of today! br br All this delight, devotion and desire! br We'll fling ourselves into September's riot! br Immure yourself within the autumn's rustle br Entirely: go crazy, or be quiet! br br How when you fall into my gentle arms br Enrobed in that silk-tasselled dressing gown br You shake the dress you wear away from you br As only coppices shake their leaves down!- br br You are the blessing on my baneful way, br When life has depths worse than disease can reach, br And courage is the only root of beauty, br And it is this that draws us each to each.
