William Wordsworth - Avaunt All Specious Pliancy Of Mind

AVAUNT all specious pliancy of mind br In men of low degree, all smooth pretence! br I better like a blunt indifference, br And self-respecting slowness, disinclined br To win me at first sight: and be there joined br Patience and temperance with this high reserve, br Honour that knows the path and will not swerve; br Affections, which, if put to proof, are kind; br And piety towards God. Such men of old br Were England's native growth; and, throughout Spain br (Thanks to high God) forests of such remain: br Then for that Country let our hopes be bold; br For matched with these shall policy prove vain, br Her arts, her strength, her iron, and her gold.
