William Wordsworth - Hoffer

William Wordsworth - Hoffer

OF mortal parents is the Hero born br By whom the undaunted Tyrolese are led? br Or is it Tell's great Spirit, from the dead br Returned to animate an age forlorn? br He comes like Phoebus through the gates of morn br When dreary darkness is discomfited, br Yet mark his modest state! upon his head, br That simple crest, a heron's plume, is worn. br O Liberty! they stagger at the shock br From van to rear--and with one mind would flee, br But half their host is buried:--rock on rock br Descends:--beneath this godlike Warrior, see! br Hills, torrents, woods, embodied to bemock br The Tyrant, and confound his cruelty.
