Alfred Noyes - Compensations

Alfred Noyes - Compensations

Not with a flash that rends the blue br Shall fall the avenging sword. br Gently as the evening dew br Descends the mighty Lord. br br His dreadful balances are made br To move with moon and tide; br Yet shall not mercy be afraid br Nor justice be denied. br br The dreams that seemed to waste away, br The kindliness forgot, br Were singing in your heart today br Although you knew them not. br br The sun shall not forget his road, br Nor the high stars their rhyme, br The traveller with the heavier load br Has one less hill to climb. br br And, though a darker shadow fall br On every struggling age, br How shall it be if, after all, br He share our pilgrimage? br br The end we mourn is not the end. br The dust has nimble wings. br But truth and beauty have a friend br At the deep heart of things. br br He will not speak? What friend belies br His love with idle breath? br We read it in each others' eyes, br And ask no more in death.
