John Greenleaf Whittier - The Emancipation Group

AMIDST thy sacred effigies br Of old renown give place, br O city, Freedom-loved! to his br Whose hand unchained a race. br Take the worn frame, that rested not br Save in a martyr's grave; br The care-lined face, that none forgot, br Bent to the kneeling slave. br Let man be free! The mighty word br He spake was not his own; br An impulse from the Highest stirred br These chiselled lips alone. br The cloudy sign, the fiery guide, br Along his pathway ran, br And Nature, through his voice, denied br The ownership of man. br We rest in peace where these sad eyes br Saw peril, strife, and pain; br His was the nation's sacrifice, br And ours the priceless gain. br O symbol of God's will on earth br As it is done above! br Bear witness to the cost and worth br Of justice and of love. br Stand in thy place and testify br To coming ages long, br That truth is stronger than a lie, br And righteousness than wrong.
