John Greenleaf Whittier - Centennial Hymn

John Greenleaf Whittier - Centennial Hymn

I. br Our fathers' God! from out whose hand br The centuries fall like grains of sand, br We meet to-day, united, free, br And loyal to our land and Thee, br To thank Thee for the era done, br And trust Thee for the opening one. br br II. br Here, where of old, by Thy design, br The fathers spake that word of Thine br Whose echo is the glad refrain br Of rended bolt and falling chain, br To grace our festal time, from all br The zones of earth our guests we call. br br III. br Be with us while the New World greets br The Old World thronging all its streets, br Unveiling all the triumphs won br By art or toil beneath the sun; br And unto common good ordain br This rivalship of hand and brain. br br IV. br Thou, who hast here in concord furled br The war flags of a gathered world, br Beneath our Western skies fulfil br The Orient's mission of good-will, br And, freighted with love's Golden Fleece, br Send back its Argonauts of peace. br br V. br For art and labor met in truce, br For beauty made the bride of use, br We thank Thee; but, withal, we crave br The austere virtues strong to save, br The honor proof to place or gold, br The manhood never bought nor sold. br br VI.
