John Greenleaf Whittier - The Well of Loch Maree

John Greenleaf Whittier - The Well of Loch Maree

Calm on the breast of Loch Maree br A little isle reposes; br A shadow woven of the oak br And willow o'er it closes. br br Within, a Druid's mound is seen, br Set round with stony warders; br A fountain, gushing through the turf, br Flows o'er its grassy borders. br br And whoso bathes therein his brow, br With care or madness burning, br Feels once again his healthful thought br And sense of peace returning. br br O restless heart and fevered brain, br Unquiet and unstable, br That holy well of Loch Maree br Is more than idle fable! br br Life's changes vex, its discords stun, br Its glaring sunshine blindeth, br And blest is he who on his way br That fount of healing findeth! br br The shadows of a humbled will br And contrite heart are o'er it; br Go read its legend, 'TRUST IN GOD,' br On Faith's white stones before it.
