John Greenleaf Whittier - The Peace Autumn

John Greenleaf Whittier - The Peace Autumn

THANK God for rest, where none molest, br And none can make afraid; br For Peace that sits as Plenty's guest br Beneath the homestead shade! br Bring pike and gun, the sword's red scourge, br The negro's broken chains, br And beat them at the blacksmith's forge br To ploughshares for our plains. br Alike henceforth our hills of snow, br And vales where cotton flowers; br All streams that flow, all winds that blow, br Are Freedom's motive-powers. br Henceforth to Labor's chivalry br Be knightly honors paid; br For nobler than the sword's shall be br The sickle's accolade. br Build up an altar to the Lord, br O grateful hearts of ours! br And shape it of the greenest sward br That ever drank the showers. br Lay all the bloom of gardens there, br And there the orchard fruits; br Bring golden grain from sun and air, br From earth her goodly roots. br There let our banners droop and flow, br The stars uprise and fall; br Our roll of martyrs, sad and slow, br Let sighing breezes call. br Their names let hands of horn and tan br And rough-shod feet applaud, br Who died to make the slave a man, br And link with toil reward. br There let the common heart keep time br To such an anthem sung br As never swelled on poet's rhyme, br Or thrilled on singer's tongue.
