Oliver Wendell Holmes - A Sentiment Offered At The Dinner To H. I. H. The Prince Napoleon

AT THE REVERE HOUSE, br SEPTEMBER 25,1861 br br THE land of sunshine and of song! br Her name your hearts divine; br To her the banquet's vows belong br Whose breasts have poured its wine; br Our trusty friend, our true ally br Through varied change and chance br So, fill your flashing goblets high,-- br I give you, VIVE LA FRANCE! br br Above our hosts in triple folds br The selfsame colors spread, br Where Valor's faithful arm upholds br The blue, the white, the red; br Alike each nation's glittering crest br Reflects the morning's glance,-- br Twin eagles, soaring east and west br Once more, then, VIVE LA FRANCE! br br Sister in trial! who shall count br Thy generous friendship's claim, br Whose blood ran mingling in the fount br That gave our land its name, br Till Yorktown saw in blended line br Our conquering arms advance, br And victory's double garlands twine br Our banners? VIVE LA FRANCE! br br O land of heroes! in our need br One gift from Heaven we crave br To stanch these wounds that vainly bleed,-- br The wise to lead the brave! br Call back one Captain of thy past br From glory's marble trance, br Whose name shall be a bugle-blast br To rouse us! VIVE LA FRANCE! br br Pluck Conde's baton from the trench, br Wake up stout Charles Martel, br Or find some woman's hand to clench br The sword of La Pucelle! br Give us one hour of old Turenne,-- br One lift of Bayard's lance,-- br Nay, call Marengo's Chief again br To lead us! VIVE LA FRANCE! br br Ah, hush! our welcome Guest shall hear br But sounds of peace and joy; br No angry echo vex thine ear, br Fair Daughter of Savoy br Once more! the land of arms and arts, br Of glory, grace, romance; br Her love lies warm in all our hearts br God bless her! VIVE LA FRANCE!br br Oliver Wendell Holmesbr br
