Oliver Wendell Holmes - An Evening Thought

Oliver Wendell Holmes - An Evening Thought

WRITTEN AT SEA br br IF sometimes in the dark blue eye, br Or in the deep red wine, br Or soothed by gentlest melody, br Still warms this heart of mine, br Yet something colder in the blood, br And calmer in the brain, br Have whispered that my youth's bright flood br Ebbs, not to flow again. br br If by Helvetia's azure lake, br Or Arno's yellow stream, br Each star of memory could awake, br As in my first young dream, br I know that when mine eye shall greet br The hillsides bleak and bare, br That gird my home, it will not meet br My childhood's sunsets there.
