Oliver Wendell Holmes - Hymn At The Funeral Services Of Charles Sumner

APRIL 29, 1874 br br SUNG BY MALE VOICES TO A NATIONAL AIR OF HOLLAND br br ONCE more, ye sacred towers, br Your solemn dirges sound; br Strew, loving hands, the April flowers, br Once more to deck his mound. br A nation mourns its dead, br Its sorrowing voices one, br As Israel's monarch bowed his head br And cried, 'My son! My son!' br br Why mourn for him?--For him br The welcome angel came br Ere yet his eye with age was dim br Or bent his stately frame; br His weapon still was bright, br His shield was lifted high br To slay the wrong, to save the right,-- br What happier hour to die? br br Thou orderest all things well; br Thy servant's work was done; br He lived to hear Oppression's knell, br The shouts for Freedom won. br Hark!! from the opening skies br The anthem's echoing swell,-- br 'O mourning Land, lift up thine eyes! br God reigneth.
