Oliver Wendell Holmes - Hymn.—The Word Of Promise

(by supposition) br br An Hymn set forth to be sung by the Great Assembly br at Newtown, [Mass.] Mo. 12. 1. 1636. br br [Written by OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES, eldest son of Rev. br ABIEL HOLMES, eighth Pastor of the First Church in br Cambridge, Massachusetts.] br br LORD, Thou hast led us as of old br Thine Arm led forth the chosen Race br Through Foes that raged, through Floods that roll'd, br To Canaan's far-off Dwelling-Place. br br Here is Thy bounteous Table spread, br Thy Manna falls on every Field, br Thy Grace our hungering Souls hath fed, br Thy Might hath been our Spear and Shield. br br Lift high Thy Buckler, Lord of Hosts! br Guard Thou Thy Servants, Sons and Sires, br While on the Godless heathen Coasts br They light Thine Israel's Altar-fires! br br The salvage Wilderness remote br Shall hear Thy Works and Wonders sung; br So from the Rock that Moses smote br The Fountain of the Desart sprung. br br Soon shall the slumbering Morn awake, br From wandering Stars of Errour freed, br When Christ the Bread of Heaven shall break br For Saints that own a common Creed. br br The Walls that fence His Flocks apart br Shall crack and crumble in Decay, br And every Tongue and every Heart br Shall welcome in the new-born Day.
