Kathleen Jessie Raine - Seen in a Glass

Kathleen Jessie Raine - Seen in a Glass

Behind the tree, behind the house, behind the stars br In the presence that I cannot see br Otherwise than as house and stars and tree. br br Tree, house and stars br Extend to infinity within themselves br Into the mystery of the world br br Where whirl the wheels of power whose pulse beat br Out of nothing, out of night, br Leaves, stones and fires, br br The living tree whose maypole dance br Of chromosome and nucleus br Traces the maze of boughs and leaves. br br The standing house of stone that poured br In molten torrent when was hurled br Out of chaos this great world, br br And suns whose kindling begins anew br Or ends the course that tree, house, world move through. br br Upheld by being that I cannot know br In other form than stars and stones and trees br Assume in nature’s glass, in nature’s eyes.
