George Sterling - Afterward (BtB)

George Sterling - Afterward (BtB)

Tho Fate, for quiet prayer, might grant me all, br Little I ask beside the lasting grace br And benediction of thy dear embrace — br That hour of dream which holds my heart in thrall. br Tho many voices of enchantment call, br One mercy would I beg from Time and Space— br The final contemplation of thy face br Till Lethe sunder and the darkness fall. br br And ah! may then thy face, a changeless light, br Companion me thro' aeons of the night! — br Filling that realm with marvel and desire br And making death not altogether sleep, br But rather as a gloom whose altars keep br A timeless vision and a ghostly fire.
