George Sterling - The City and the Silence

George Sterling - The City and the Silence

Deeper than ocean's thunder unsubdued, br Titanic voices of the warfare strong br Of man on fellow-man about me throng br In my captivity. Yet how elude br The tumult of the torrents that exclude br The voices that to loneliness belong? br How may I find thy silences, O Song? br Thine angels whisper but in solitude. br br I am set far from that. Fast as a flow'r br In some sad city-garden, for release br I search my grim horizon without cease, br Craving, if only for a little hour, br The stillness and the shadow of a bow'r br Where the blue mountains hold a realm of peace.
