Oliver Goldsmith - On the Death of the Right Hounourable ---

YE Muses, pour the pitying tear br For Pollio snatch'd away; br O! had he liv'd another year!- br 'He had not died to-day'. br br O! were he born to bless mankind, br In virtuous times of yore, br Heroes themselves had fallen behind!- br 'Whene'er he went before'. br br How sad the groves and plains appear, br And sympathetic sheep; br Even pitying hills would drop a tear!- br 'If hills could learn to weep'. br br His bounty in exalted strain br Each bard might well display; br Since none implor'd relief in vain!- br 'That went reliev'd away'. br br And hark! I hear the tuneful throng br His obsequies forbid, br He still shall live, shall live as long!- br 'As ever dead man did'.
