George Sterling - Autumn

George Sterling - Autumn

How droops the troubled year br And now her tiny sunset stains the leaf. br A holy fear, br A rapt, elusive grief, br Make imminent the swift, exalting tear. br The long wind's weary sigh- br Knowest, O listener! for what it wakes? br Adown the sky br What star of Time forsakes br Her pinnacle? What dream and dreamer die? br A presence half-divine br Stands at the threshold, ready to depart br Without a sign. br Now seems the world's deep heart br About to break. What sorrow stirs in mine? br A mist of twilight rain br Hides now the orange edges of the day.
