Oliver Goldsmith - An Epigram

Oliver Goldsmith - An Epigram

ADDRESSED TO THE GENTLEMEN REFLECTED ON IN THE ROSCIAD, br A POEM, BY THE AUTHOR br br Worried with debts and past all hopes of bail, br His pen he prostitutes t' avoid a gaol. br ROSCOM. br br br LET not the 'hungry' Bavius' angry stroke br Awake resentment, or your rage provoke; br But pitying his distress, let virtue shine, br And giving each your bounty, 'let him dine'; br For thus retain'd, as learned counsel can, br Each case, however bad, he'll new japan; br And by a quick transition, plainly show br 'Twas no defect of yours, but 'pocket low', br That caused his 'putrid kennel' to o'erflow.
