Archibald Lampman - Comfort

Archibald Lampman - Comfort

Comfort the sorrowful with watchful eyes br In silence, for the tongue cannot avail. br Vex not his wounds with rhetoric, nor the stale br Worn truths, that are but maddening mockeries br To him whose grief outmasters all replies. br Only watch near him gently; do but bring br The piteous help of silent ministering. br Watchful and tender. This alone is wise. br br So shall thy presence and thine every motion, br The grateful knowledge of thy sad devotion br Melt out the passionate hardness of his grief, br And break the flood-gates of thy pent-up soul. br He shall bow down beneath thy mute control, br And take thine hands, and weep, and find relief.
