Li Po - Drinking Alone in the Moonlight

Li Po - Drinking Alone in the Moonlight

Amongst the flowers I br am alone with my pot of wine br drinking by myself; then lifting br my cup I asked the moon br to drink with me, its reflection br and mine in the wine cup, just br the three of us; then I sigh br for the moon cannot drink, br and my shadow goes emptily along br with me never saying a word; br with no other friends here, I can br but use these two for company; br br in the time of happiness, I br too must be happy with all br around me; I sit and sing br and it is as if the moon br accompanies me; then if I br dance, it is my shadow that br dances along with me; while br still not drunk, I am glad br to make the moon and my shadow br into friends, but then when br I have drunk too much, we br all part; yet these are br friends I can always count on br these who have no emotion br whatsoever; I hope that one day br we three will meet again, br deep in the Milky Way. br br Version 2 br Beneath the blossoms with a pot of wine, br No friends at hand, so I poured alone; br I raised my cup to invite the moon, br Turned to my shadow, and we became three. br Now the moon had never learned about drinking, br And my shadow had merely followed my form, br But I quickly made friends with the moon and my shadow; br To find pleasure in life, make the most of the spring. br br Whenever I sang, the moon swayed with me; br Whenever I danced, my shadow went wild. br Drinking, we shared our enjoyment together; br Drunk, then each went off on his own. br But forever agreed on dispassionate revels, br We promised to meet in the far Milky Way.
