George MacDonald - Christmas Song of the Old Children

George MacDonald - Christmas Song of the Old Children

Well for youth to seek the strong, br Beautiful, and brave! br We, the old, who walk along br Gently to the grave, br Only pay our court to thee, br Child of all Eternity! br br We are old who once were young, br And we grow more old; br Songs we are that have been sung, br Tales that have been told; br Yellow leaves, wind-blown to thee, br Childhood of Eternity! br br If we come too sudden near, br Lo, Earth's infant cries, br For our faces wan and drear br Have such withered eyes! br Thou, Heaven's child, turn'st not away br From the wrinkled ones who pray! br br Smile upon us with thy mouth br And thine eyes of grace; br On our cold north breathe thy south. br Thaw the frozen face: br Childhood all from thee doth flow- br Melt to song our age's snow. br br Gray-haired children come in crowds, br Thee, their Hope, to greet: br Is it swaddling clothes or shrouds br Hampering so our feet? br Eldest child, the shadows gloom: br Take the aged children home.
