George MacDonald - December 27, 1879

Every time would have its song br If the heart were right, br Seeing Love all tender-strong br Fills the day and night. br br Weary drop the hands of Prayer br Calling out for peace; br Love always and everywhere br Sings and does not cease. br br Fear, the caitiff, through the night br Silent peers about; br Love comes singing with a light br And doth cast him out. br br Hate and Guile and Wrath and Doubt br Never try to sing; br If they did, oh, what a rout br Anguished ears would sting! br br Pride indeed will sometimes aim br At the finer speech, br But the best that he can frame br Is a peacock-screech. br br Greed will also sometimes try: br Happiness he hunts! br But his dwelling is a sty, br And his tones are grunts. br br Faith will sometimes raise a song br Soaring up to heaven, br Then she will be silent long, br And will weep at even. br br Hope has many a gladsome note br Now and then to pipe; br But, alas, he has the throat br Of a bird unripe. br br Often Joy a stave will start br Which the welkin rends, br But it always breaks athwart, br And untimely ends. br br Grief, who still for death doth long, br Always self-abhorred, br Has but one low, troubled song, br br I am sorry, Lord br . br br But Love singeth in the vault. br Singeth on the stair; br Even for Sorrow will not halt, br Singeth everywhere. br br For the great Love everywhere br Over all doth glow; br Draws his birds up trough the air, br Tends his birds below. br br And with songs ascending sheer br Love-born Love replies, br Singing br Father br in his ear br Where she bleeding lies.
