George MacDonald - Rejoice

George MacDonald - Rejoice

'Rejoice,' said the Sun; 'I will make thee gay br With glory and gladness and holiday; br I am dumb, O man, and I need thy voice!' br But man would not rejoice. br br 'Rejoice in thyself,' said he, 'O Sun, br For thy daily course is a lordly one; br In thy lofty place rejoice if thou can: br For me, I am only a man.' br br 'Rejoice,' said the Wind; 'I am free and strong, br And will wake in thy heart an ancient song; br Hear the roaring woods, my organ noise!' br But man would not rejoice. br br 'Rejoice, O Wind, in thy strength,' said he, br 'For thou fulfillest thy destiny; br Shake the forest, the faint flowers fan; br For me, I am only a man.' br br 'Rejoice,' said the Night, 'with moon and star, br For the Sun and the Wind are gone afar; br I am here with rest and dreaming choice!' br But man would not rejoice; br br For he said-'What is rest to me, I pray, br Whose labour leads to no gladsome day? br He only can dream who has hope behind: br Alas for me and my kind!' br br Then a voice that came not from moon or star, br From the sun, or the wind that roved afar, br Said, 'Man, I am with thee-hear my voice!' br And man said, 'I rejoice.
