George MacDonald - Quiet Dead!

George MacDonald - Quiet Dead!

Quiet, quiet dead, br Have ye aught to say br From your hidden bed br In the earthy clay? br br Fathers, children, mothers, br Ye are very quiet; br Can ye shout, my brothers? br I would know you by it! br br Have ye any words br That are like to ours? br Have ye any birds? br Have ye any flowers? br br Could ye rise a minute br When the sun is warm? br I would know you in it, br I would take no harm. br br I am half afraid br In the ghostly night; br If ye all obeyed br I should fear you quite. br br But when day is breaking br In the purple east br I would meet you waking- br One of you at least- br br When the sun is tipping br Every stony block, br And the sun is slipping br Down the weathercock. br br Quiet, quiet dead, br I will not perplex you; br What my tongue hath said br Haply it may vex you! br br Yet I hear you speaking br With a quiet speech, br As if ye were seeking br Better things to teach: br br 'Wait a little longer, br Suffer and endure br Till your heart is stronger br And your eyes are pure- br br A little longer, brother, br With your fellow-men: br We will meet each other br Otherwhere again.
