George MacDonald - Oh That A Wind

George MacDonald - Oh That A Wind

Oh that a wind would call br From the depths of the leafless wood! br Oh that a voice would fall br On the ear of my solitude! br br Far away is the sea, br With its sound and its spirit tone; br Over it white clouds flee; br But I am alone, alone. br br Straight and steady and tall br The trees stand on their feet; br Fast by the old stone wall br The moss grows green and sweet; br But my heart is full of fears, br For the sun shines far away; br And they look in my face through tears, br And the light of a dying day. br br My heart was glad last night br As I pressed it with my palm; br Its throb was airy and light br As it sang some spirit psalm; br But it died away in my breast br As I wandered forth to-day,- br As a bird sat dead on its nest, br While others sang on the spray. br br O weary heart of mine, br Is there ever a Truth for thee? br Will ever a sun outshine br But the sun that shines on me? br Away, away through the air br The clouds and the leaves are blown; br And my heart hath need of prayer, br For it sitteth alone, alone.
