Eugene Field - A Lullaby

Eugene Field - A Lullaby

The stars are twinkling in the skies, br The earth is lost in slumbers deep; br So hush, my sweet, and close thine eyes, br And let me lull thy soul to sleep. br Compose thy dimpled hands to rest, br And like a little birdling lie br Secure within thy cozy nest br Upon my loving mother breast, br And slumber to my lullaby, br So hushaby--O hushaby. br br The moon is singing to a star br The little song I sing to you; br The father sun has strayed afar, br As baby's sire is straying too. br And so the loving mother moon br Sings to the little star on high; br And as she sings, her gentle tune br Is borne to me, and thus I croon br For thee, my sweet, that lullaby br Of hushaby--O hushaby. br br There is a little one asleep br That does not hear his mother's song; br But angel watchers--as I weep-- br Surround his grave the night-tide long. br And as I sing, my sweet, to you, br Oh, would the lullaby I sing-- br The same sweet lullaby he knew br While slumb'ring on this bosom too-- br Were borne to him on angel's wing! br So hushaby--O hushaby.
