Eugene Field - Sailor And Shade

Eugene Field - Sailor And Shade

SAILOR br br You, who have compassed land and sea, br Now all unburied lie; br All vain your store of human lore, br For you were doomed to die. br The sire of Pelops likewise fell,-- br Jove's honored mortal guest; br So king and sage of every age br At last lie down to rest. br Plutonian shades enfold the ghost br Of that majestic one br Who taught as truth that he, forsooth, br Had once been Pentheus' son; br Believe who may, he's passed away, br And what he did is done. br A last night comes alike to all; br One path we all must tread, br Through sore disease or stormy seas br Or fields with corpses red. br Whate'er our deeds, that pathway leads br To regions of the dead. br br br SHADE br br The fickle twin Illyrian gales br Overwhelmed me on the wave; br But you that live, I pray you give br My bleaching bones a grave! br Oh, then when cruel tempests rage br You all unharmed shall be; br Jove's mighty hand shall guard by land br And Neptune's on the sea. br Perchance you fear to do what may br Bring evil to your race? br Oh, rather fear that like me here br You'll lack a burial place.
