Eugene Field - The Sleeping Child

Eugene Field - The Sleeping Child

My baby slept--how calm his rest, br As o'er his handsome face a smile br Like that of angel flitted, while br He lay so still upon my breast! br br My baby slept--his baby head br Lay all unkiss'd 'neath pall and shroud: br I did not weep or cry aloud-- br I only wished I, too, were dead! br br My baby sleeps--a tiny mound, br All covered by the little flowers, br Woos me in all my waking hours, br Down in the quiet burying-ground. br br And when I sleep I seem to be br With baby in another land-- br I take his little baby hand-- br He smiles and sings sweet songs to me. br br Sleep on, O baby, while I keep br My vigils till this day be passed! br Then shall I, too, lie down at last, br And with my baby darling sleep.
