James Whitcomb Riley - A Variation

James Whitcomb Riley - A Variation

I am tired of this! br Nothing else but loving! br Nothing else but kiss and kiss, br Coo, and turtle-doving! br Can't you change the order some? br Hate me just a little--come! br br Lay aside your 'dears,' br 'Darlings,' 'kings,' and 'princes!'-- br Call me knave, and dry your tears-- br Nothing in me winces,-- br Call me something low and base-- br Something that will suit the case! br br Wish I had your eyes br And their drooping lashes! br I would dry their teary lies br Up with lightning-flashes-- br Make your sobbing lips unsheathe br All the glitter of your teeth! br br Can't you lift one word-- br With some pang of laughter-- br Louder than the drowsy bird br Crooning 'neath the rafter? br Just one bitter word, to shriek br Madly at me as I speak! br br How I hate the fair br Beauty of your forehead! br How I hate your fragrant hair! br How I hate the torrid br Touches of your splendid lips, br And the kiss that drips and drips! br br Ah, you pale at last! br And your face is lifted br Like a white sail to the blast, br And your hands are shifted br Into fists: and, towering thus, br You are simply glorious! br br Now before me looms br Something more than human; br Something more than beauty blooms br In the wrath of Woman-- br Something to bow down before br Reverently and adore.
