James Whitcomb Riley - While The Musician Played

O it was but a dream I had br While the musician played!-- br And here the sky, and here the glad br Old ocean kissed the glade-- br And here the laughing ripples ran, br And here the roses grew br That threw a kiss to every man br That voyaged with the crew. br br Our silken sails in lazy folds br Drooped in the breathless breeze: br As o'er a field of marigolds br Our eyes swam o'er the seas; br While here the eddies lisped and purled br Around the island's rim, br And up from out the underworld br We saw the mermen swim. br br And it was dawn and middle-day br And midnight--for the moon br On silver rounds across the bay br Had climbed the skies of June-- br And there the glowing, glorious king br Of day ruled o'er his realm, br With stars of midnight glittering br About his diadem. br br The seagull reeled on languid wing br In circles round the mast, br We heard the songs the sirens sing br As we went sailing past; br And up and down the golden sands br A thousand fairy throngs br Flung at us from their flashing hands br The echoes of their songs. br br O it was but a dream I had br While the musician played-- br For here the sky, and here the glad br Old ocean kissed the glade; br And here the laughing ripples ran, br And here the roses grew br That threw a kiss to every man br That voyaged with the crew.
