Charles Lamb - Lines

Charles Lamb - Lines

ON THE CELEBRATED PICTURE BY LEONARDO DA VINCI, CALLED THE VIRGIN OF THE ROCKS br br While young John runs to greet br The greater Infant's feet, br The Mother standing by, with trembling passion br Of devout admiration, br Beholds the engaging mystic play, and pretty adoration; br Nor knows as yet the full event br Of those so low beginnings, br From whence we date our winnings, br But wonders at the intent br Of those new rites, and what that strange child-worship meant. br But at her side br An angel doth abide, br With such a perfect joy br As no dim doubts alloy, br An intuition, br A glory, an amenity, br Passing the dark condition br Of blind humanity, br As if he surely knew br All the blest wonders should ensue, br Or he had lately left the upper sphere, br And had read all the sovran schemes and divine riddles there.
