Charles Lamb - Eyes

Charles Lamb - Eyes

Lucy, what do you espy br In the cast in Jenny's eye br That should you to laughter move? br I far other feelings prove. br When on me she does advance br Her good-natured countenance, br And those eyes which in their way br Saying much, so much would say, br They to me no blemish seem, br Or as none I them esteem; br I their imperfection prize br Above other clearer eyes. br br br Eyes do not as jewels go br By the brightness and the show, br But the meanings which surround them, br And the sweetness shines around them. br br br Isabel's are black as jet, br But she cannot that forget, br And the pains she takes to show them br Robs them of the praise we owe them. br Ann's, though blue, affected fall; br Kate's are bright, and fierce withal; br And the sparklers of her sister br From ill-humour lose their lustre. br Only Jenny's eyes we see, br By their very plainness, free br From the vices which do smother br All the beauties of the other.
